The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster
Monday January 29, 7pm
Z Below
Directed by Gendell Hing-Hernández

“Only connect” was the central moral imperative in the works of writer E. M. Forster, and he saw the rise of the machine  as a furthering of the disconnect between man and nature. The future world he imagined over a hundred years ago is eerily similar to the direction our world is heading today, a world in which, “the clumsy system of public gatherings had been abandoned”, and the custom of touching one another “had become obsolete”, a world in which humanity communicates chiefly through the cyber working of The Machine.

Presenting Z Space 2024 Artist-in-Residence Austin Dean Ashford’s two innovative works in rep:

(I)SLAND T(RAP)

A hip-hop riff about Black Ulysses on an Odyssey of self-discovery and a powerful exploration of a young artist of color navigating the turbulent waters of contemporary American culture while trying to find his authentic voice.

AND

BLACK BOOK

Welcome to Melvin Tolson High School—it's summer school, it's hot, the barbwire fence is fixed, and a young African American boy has been shot, leaving his group of friends reeling from the loss and wondering if their voices can ever be heard.
