Arts is happy to present Word for Word in a brand new School &
Library Tour! Debuting in Spring 2008, the new tour will feature
newly-commissioned stories from celebrated author Greg Sarris for
both grades K-5 and grades 8-12. We invite you to bring these wonderful
stories and our workshops to your students in 2008!
Grades K-5
“When Tom Smith Caused the 1906 Earthquake”
The retelling of a family folktale, staged in the Word for Word
style expressly for children K-5. Who is the most powerful medicine
man - Tom Smith or Big Jose? Animals talk, fire walks, many strange
things happen - but Tom Smith isn’t satisfied with everyday
magic. He wants to be the most powerful. His out-of-control desire
spreads strong magic all the way to San Francisco...do you hear
the rumbling in the hills?

Grades 8-12
“Ancestor”
When 15-year-old R.D.’s grandmother dies, his world is torn
apart. His mother can’t care for him, and he wonders where
he will go. R.D. looks to the stories of his Native American ancestors
and finds a key to his future. Through his grandmother’s tales
he learns that, while immediate family can’t always be there
for you, your extended family of past generations can serve as a
guide, pointing out the way.
