Workshops
Workshops are intended for grades 3 and up, and have 5-10 classroom hours over a period of 1-2 weeks. Students use material such as poetry, flash fiction or short stories, and transform that material into a theatrical performance for their peers. The program begins by meeting with the classroom teacher to identify learning goals and classroom challenges, and the teaching artist selects a text that supports the classroom teacher’s curriculum. With a 12:1 student to teaching artist ratio, students read and analyze text, play theater games and ultimately create a script and a short performance in the Word for Word style, with very basic costumes, sound and theatrical elements.
Residencies
These are custom designed, longer-term workshops typically for students from grades 7-12. Residencies may last anywhere from 1 to 6 months, depending on the project. Like classroom workshops, residencies choose content to support the classroom teacher’s existing curriculum, but will be able to work with a longer piece of text and create a longer performance. Students learn about the components of a short story and then transform that story into a fully realized piece of theatre, including full costumes, light and sound design, often culminating in performances open to friends, family and/or the public.
Professional development
These workshops are tailored to classroom teachers, walking them through the Word for Word methodology and equipping them with Word for Word tools to incorporate into their teaching process. Each participant leaves with a copy of our Teacher Resource Guide which details games and activities used in the Word for Word teaching process.
Note that professional development workshops may be held in conjunction with workshops/residencies for students, allowing classroom teachers to see the curriculum in action.
