Z Below is our 78 seat black-box theater located at 470 Florida St (just downstairs from our Main Stage). Acquired in 2013, this theater is as intimate as our main stage is grandiose, an ideal setting for language-driven plays, dramatic readings, workshops, puppetry, and much more.
Most recently we've presented such new works here as Now for Now (created by Mark Jackson and Megan Trout), Birdheart (featuring the puppetry and music of Julian Crouch and Saskia Lane), Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's The Totalitarians, and Lauren Yee's Hookman (a co-production with Encore Theatre Company).
Word for Word in particular has taken great advantage of this space, staging not only many of their Off the Page readings here, but also full productions like Word for Word's Holiday High Jinx, 36 Stories by Sam Sheppard, and Stories by Emma Donoghue and Colm Tóibín. The room allows an up-close view of the actors where you can truly hear every word.
Many outside companies find Z Below an ideal springboard for the first run of a new play. Cable Car Nymphomaniac by FOGG Theatre began its life here with a sold out run, Theatre Rhinoceros mounts productions here annually; other clients include Bootstrap Theater, Golden Thread Productions, the One Minute Play Festival, and Chris Black with TOUGH.
