Based on Joseph Conrad’s classic novel, Heart of Darkness is a powerful opera that portrays the greedy world of ivory smugglers in Central Africa as narrated by the central character, Marlow. The plot unfolds through a series of short, fast-paced scenes that gradually increase in tension, as Marlow’s tale approaches its climax.

Tarik O’Regan’s score is concise and colorful, and is imbued with a magical and haunting beauty. Joined with Tom Phillips’ inspired libretto, this work truly delivers the power of Conrad’s psychodrama, conveying deep emotion and touching audiences. Creative Director Brian Staufenbiel’s design, in high-impact Opera Parallèle style, is full of production innovations that bring this opera to stirring life.
