Urban Jazz Dance Company presents GentriDeafcation: Echoes of Houselessness in the Bay. Antoine Hunter/Urban Jazz Dance Company (African, Indigenous, Deaf, Disabled, choreographer) created a one hour and ten minutes raw, compelling work on what it means to be “Houseless in the Bay.” The work presents true stories pulling from interviews with Deaf and Disabled folks experiencing homelessness in the Bay Area.

Performers will use sign language, spoken text, dance (modern, contemporary, and jazz), film, music and silence to look at the lives of Deaf houseless folks: What does it mean to be a Deaf person with no house and/or living in the streets? What about stories of DeafDisabled women of color? In these interdisciplinary works, we explore the tension, perspectives and assumptions of the general public towards unhoused folks. GentriDeafcation: Echoes of Houselessness in the Bay is intended for both Hearing and Deaf audiences. Saturday’s performance will be followed by a Q & A Panel joined by representatives from local human agency service organizations who serve these populations. Urban Jazz Dance Company's mission through this panel is to educate audiences about the exponential risk of homelessness in our communities in the Bay Area where homelessness is already a growing crisis. Where can you go if you become houseless? See this show to find out! All performances and the panel will be ASL interpreted. Saturday’s performance and panel will also have live captions!
