REPORTS TO: Director of Development and Director of Marketing
Z Space empowers artistic risk, collaboration, and camaraderie amongst artists, audience, and community in the service of creating, developing, and presenting new work. Operating out of an old can factory in the Mission District of San Francisco, Z Space activates two performance spaces, an 85-seat intimate theater and a 236-seat flexible performance space, with a warehouse aesthetic and an adventurous edge. Eschewing traditional theater models with fixed seasons and a singular artistic vision, Z Space strives to embrace a multitude of artistic voices through a variety of programs and partnerships.
The Communications Manager will implement aspects of Z Space’s public facing storytelling and messaging including social media, email and print campaigns, and graphic design. This position will work cross-departmentally within fundraising and marketing and touch all programs at Z Space including our resident theater company Word for Word. They will report to both the Director of Development and Director of Marketing. As Z Space moves to re-brand in the fall of 2025, this position will be crucial in defining our brand and public image and work as one of Z Space’s frontline storytellers.
Core Responsibilities
Raise roughly $50,000 annually through Annual Fund solicitations
Develop, execute, and manage Annual Fund including donor stewardship and cultivation campaigns
Track and analyze success of different avenues of receiving gifts (mail, email, in-person, etc.) and make educated recommendations based in data
Coordinate any printing, mailing, and/or distribution of collateral material
Create and manage production timelines for printed, electronic, and digital campaigns
Develop and design communication strategies and branding/graphic elements for marketing and fundraising campaigns
Work with Director of Marketing to build and manage ticketing for shows, monitor ticket sales, advise on strategies for audience engagement, and strategize overall institutional marketing strategy for all Z Space public facing activities
Assist Director of Marketing with maintenance of website as needed
Manage organizational Style Guide and update and distribute as needed
Draft content and help edit and review outgoing communication including proofing for grammar and assurance that all public facing materials follow the company Style Guide
Create and manage production of innovative, flexible media (videos, photographs, etc.) for marketing, publicity, or archival purposes
Work with Director of Development and Director of Marketing to create and maintain Calendar of Communications including all emails, social media, and direct mail communications
Help maintain our ticketing database and patron data in Audience View
Execute day-to-day social media efforts and help develop Z’s digital presence
Collect organizational data across departments including sending audience surveys
Perform other job-related special projects and duties as assigned
Attend shows and assist with special events as required
Desired Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years of related work experience in fundraising, marketing, or communications
Knowledge of principles and practices of fundraising
Demonstrated experience in effective storytelling and messaging
Commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace culture
Passion for performing arts
Exceptional written and verbal communications skills and excellent interpersonal skills
Strong creativity, initiative, and project management skills
Highly developed time-management skills with great attention to detail
Experience with content creation for social media
Experience working with a Customer Relationship Manager (CRM), we currently use Audience View
Experience working with the following programs/software: Mailchimp, Google Suite, Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), Canva, Asana (or other project management software), and iMovie (or comparable video editing software)
Media production skills including photography, graphic design, and/or videography are a plus
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and manage competing priorities successfully

This is a full-time exempt position with benefits including but not limited to health care, dental, and generous vacation accrual. Z Space is currently on a hybrid schedule with three (3) days in-office at our theater in San Francisco and two (2) days work from home. Due to the nature of Z Space programming, some work is required outside of regular business hours.
