Located in the heart of San Francisco’s vibrant and historic Mission District, Z Space is an unconventional and unique 13,000 square foot venue with the flexibility to suit a variety of event needs. In addition to theater and dance productions, we host community events, staff retreats, holiday parties, ping-pong tournaments, and more.

Originally constructed as a factory for the American Can Company, Z Space has been converted into one of the most dynamic arts centers in San Francisco, featuring a 236-seat flexible performance space (The Steindler Stage), a lobby equipped with a full bar, and a separate downstairs 85-seat intimate theater (Z Below).

Z Space is easily accessible by BART, MUNI, car, bike, and foot. The neighborhood around Z Space teems with artists studios, galleries, bakeries, chocolate factories, and some of SF's hottest bars and restaurants.

For all space use requests, please submit an inquiry via our online form. Please note we rarely book less than 2 weeks in advance of an event date.

Formalized in 2018, our Subspace program provides heavily subsidized or free rent and support to artists who cannot afford our below-market non-profit rental rate. Since its inception, Z has given away over $350,000 in subsidies to our community. To learn more and apply for Subspace funds, please visit our Subspace page here.

The Steindler Stage

  • Flexible performance space

  • Professional stage lighting

  • Sound system & PA system available

  • Stage is 40’ wide by 80’ deep, sprung floor

  • Capacity: Performance seating: 229–236. Total building capacity 399

  • Front and rear projection screens

  • The Z Lobby space (see right) is included in a rental of the Steindler Stage

Z Below

  • Intimate theater space

  • Sound system & PA system available

  • Stage is 20’ wide by 24’ deep (standard), sprung floor

  • Capacity: Performance seating 73–85 (depending on # of cast & crew). Total capacity 90

  • Small lobby space with bar available for all events

Z LOBBY

  • 40’ high ceilings and natural light

  • Small prep kitchen available

  • Full bar available for all events

  • Sound system & PA system and 12' x 8' movable stage available (extra charges apply)

  • Capacity: approx 125 people standing

  • Room Specs: 40’ wide by 20’ across

  • 19' wide by 12' high Gallery wall + small moveable wall for art installations or projections
