Originally constructed as a factory for the American Can Company in 1925, Z Space has evolved into one of the most dynamic arts centers in San Francisco, featuring a 236-seat flexible performance space (The Steindler Stage), a lobby equipped with a full bar, and a separate downstairs 85-seat intimate theater (Z Below). 

Z Space’s goal is to be as accessible as possible to everyone. We are a fully ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant venue that is committed to making the experience of live performance safe and comfortable for all. Z Space is a wheelchair accessible theater and has limited accessible seating for all shows. Bathrooms are wheelchair accessible and are welcoming to all genders. Assisted Listening Devices (ALDs) are available to borrow upon request.

Accessibility Specifics:

All Venues: Z Space operates TWO venues - Z Below and the Steindler Stage - often with simultaneous shows. Be sure you’re going to the CORRECT venue!

  • Seating: Seating in Z Space is a mix of folding chairs, limited accessible armless chairs, and fixed seating. 

    • Accessible seating is limited.

    • Important Note: For your own safety and emergency preparedness, if you are unable to get to or from your chosen seat without assistance, we may reassign your seat or change your show reservation depending on availability. 

  • Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs): We have Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) available to borrow for each performance. Please visit the box office to retrieve your ALD and be prepared to trade your ID or credit card as insurance. You will receive your personal identification once the borrowed ALD is returned. 

    • Important note: ALDs will pick up and amplify audio from the microphone feeds and from a “boom” microphone above the stage. Audio amplification will vary by production and is dependent on microphone usage. ALDs may not be effective during shows with concurrent sound effects and dialogue. 

    • Patrons who regularly use hearing aids often have greater success listening to the production via their hearing aids compared to our ALDs.

  • Service Animals: Z Space always allows registered service animals in our theater. For non-service animals, including Emotional Support Animals (ESAs), we love your furry friends, but please leave them at home.

  • Coat Check: We do not offer any coat check services or personal item storage. Please do not bring anything that cannot fit in your lap or directly under your seat.

  • Water & Refreshments: Z Space provides a complimentary water station for all performances. Refreshments are available for purchase at most shows and may be brought inside the theater. No outside food or beverages are allowed unless otherwise stated. 

Z Space (Lobby & Steindler Stage)

  • Wheelchair Accessibility: Z Space is wheelchair accessible via ramp. We can remove seats to seat wheelchairs in the front row (row AA). Z Space has two (2) wheelchair accessible bathroom stalls.

  • Seating in the Steindler Stage:

    • Seating is tiered: each row goes up by two steps. Stairs, without handrails, are required to access seats in rows A-Q. Row AA is on the ground floor. 

    • All accessible seating options are in row AA. We have six (6) ADA accessible chairs in the Steindler Stage (unfixed, armless, and have an increased weight capacity of up to 400lbs).

  • Seating in the Lobby: The Lobby is mostly standing room and has limited accessible seating options readily available.

  • Climate Control: Z Space has no climate control or HVAC systems. Dress appropriately for the weather outside - if it’s cold outside it’s extra cold inside. If it’s unusually warm outside, it’s hot inside.

  • All-Gender Restrooms: Z Space has six (6) stalls including two (2) wheelchair accessible stalls, and two (2) urinals.

Z Below

  • Wheelchair Accessibility: Z Below is a basement venue which requires two sets of stairs to access. For those who are unable to use the stairs, we have an ADA lift to bring you down from street level. Please alert the Front of House staff if you need to use the lift. We can remove seats to seat wheelchairs in the front row (row X). Z Space has one (1) wheelchair accessible bathroom stall.

  • Seating in Z Below:

    •  Seating is tiered, each row goes up by two steps: Stairs, with handrails, are required to access seats in rows A-G. Row X is on the ground floor.

    • All accessible seating options are in row X. We have four (4) ADA accessible chairs in Z Below (unfixed, armless, and have an increased weight capacity of up to 400lbs).

  • Climate Control: Z Below is climate controlled at approximately 70 degrees year round. 

All-Gender Restrooms: Z Below has two (2) single use restrooms, including one (1) wheelchair accessible stall.
