Left Coast Chamber Ensemble presents:

Dorothea and Artemisia

June 1 & 2, 2019 at Z Space

Left Coast Chamber Ensemble celebrates two incredible women artists through chamber opera this June.

Artemisia, a new opera by Laura Schwendinger with libretto by Ginger Strand, is an opera of passion, betrayal, and art in 17th century Italy based upon the life of famed Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 –c.1656). With projected images that come to life, Schwendinger’s new opera tackles Gentileschi’s struggles and triumphs as she battles inequality and reveals hidden stories. Christopher Stark's micro-opera, From The Field, focuses on the art and milieu of Depression Era photographer Dorothea Lange, exploring the lives of migrants fleeing the Dust Bowl.

The complete and fully-staged world premiere of Artemisia is made possible by generous funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Opera Center, and the San Francisco Arts Commission.
